Artist bio:

Sylvia is a Canadian painter from Montreal, Quebec. She’s been painting since she was a child. She studied in Fine Arts in cégep du Vieux-Montréal, an art college in Montreal, before changing her major to pursue nursing. She then worked as a nurse and as a freelance artist in Montreal, painting murals for Japanese bars and restaurants. She also gathered experience with photography and content creation managing multiple social media profiles for cafes and restaurants around Montreal. She left her work and since then, she has been traveling around. She is currently based in Yokosuka, Japan.

In her art, she draws influences from her travels, the things she sees and her passing connections. She uses mountains, water, clouds and fish as poetic objects to address dichotomies, such as reality and illusion, inside and out, permanence and ephemerality. She paints to capture that feeling of nostalgia, of the intangible and the transience of time... our memories, our dreams and our moods.

The concept of ephemeral moments lies at the heart of her work.

プロフィール：

モントリオール出身、カナダ人アーティスト。幼少のころから絵を描き始める。モントリオールの芸術専門学校（cégep du Vieux-Montréal）で美術を学び、その後大学では看護学を専攻。卒業後は看護士の仕事の傍ら、フリーランスアーティストとして日本食レストランやバーの内装壁画も手がける。またモントリオールのカフェやレストランのSNS用プロフィールの管理を通してコンテンツ作成や写真技術の実績も積む。これらの仕事を離れてからは各地を旅行し、現在は横須賀在住。

作品には、これまでの旅で関わったものから受けた影響が表れている。山々や水、雲を空想的に描くことで、現実と幻想、内側と外側、永久性と一時性などの二極性を表現し、また、懐かしさの感覚や、記憶、夢、印象など、形のないものや時のはかなさの感覚を捉えて描いている。

はかない瞬間のコンセプトが常に作品の中心に置かれている。

Artist statement:

When we see a sunset, we just revel in its beauty. We don’t point to the sky and say “that part needs to be a little more pink and that part needs more orange”.  We just appreciate the beauty of it. Thus, I use the sunset and its colours as a starting point to explore the relationship between my inner feelings and my surroundings. Working with acrylics, pencils and wood allows me to bring a soft, dreamy feel, as well as an unrefined touch to my work, allowing me to play with different textures and depths of colours.

A lot of my work is done in self-reflection to bring forth the tangibility of our desires and our dreams in relation to our realities and memories. To everyone who forgets the connection between their desires and their reality, I am also guilty and this is a gentle reminder to listen to your heart.

アーティスト・ステートメント

夕日を見た時、私たちはただその美しさを味わう。だれも”あの部分にもっとピンク、そこにもっとオレンジ色が必要”などとは言わない。その美しさに感謝するだけだ。だから私は自分の中にある感情と周囲との関係を見出す出発点として、夕日とその色を使う。アクリル、鉛筆、木を使うことで、さまざまな質感や色の深みと戯れながら、夢のような柔らかい感覚と同時に自然で素朴なタッチを作品に表している。

私の作品の多くは、現実と記憶の中で欲望と夢の形を引き出すために、自分を見つめ直す中で作られている。私自身も含め、欲望と現実のつながりを忘れてしまったすべての人に対して、自分の心の声に耳を傾けることを思い出させるものである。
